O pato é uma ave que pertence a família Anseridae na qual estão inseridas as sub-famílias Dendrocygninae, Anatinae, Merginae ou Oxyurinae originária da América do Sul.
São aves geralmente menores que os anserídeos (gansos e cisnes) e podem ser encontrados tanto em água doce como salgada.
Os patos alimentam-se de vegetação aquática, moluscos e pequenos invertebrados e algumas espécies são aves migradoras.
Os machos se diferenciam das fêmeas principalmente pela diferença dos sons emitidos pelos animais (o macho emite um som que se assemelha a de um assopro, enquanto a fêmea emite um som semelhante a algo como [fi'fi]) e por possuirem mais carnúnculas ("verrugas vermelhas") na cabeça.
Os patos são utilizados pelo homem na alimentação, vestuário (as penas) e de entretenimento (caça).
Algumas pessoas caçam essas espécies fazendo com que cada dia se tornem menos a cada ano correndo risco de extinção.
